How to properly store perfume, even on vacation

Have you ever sprayed a perfume after not using it for a long time and noticed that its fragrance is no longer the same? This is completely normal, because the substances in the perfume disperse into the air even just by opening the bottle. Let’s look at some useful techniques for preserving it in the best way, while also examining possible expiration dates, and what to do with your fragrance when you travel.

Tips for correctly storing a perfume

Generally, perfumes can last two to three years once opened. This also depends, above all, on how they are stored, because by following a few small and simple precautions, you can easily extend the durability of their fragrance and freshness.

  • First of all, it’s essential to understand how often you use your perfume, in order to determine the most suitable size for you. If you are not used to wearing it often, opt for a small bottle; otherwise, if you use it abundantly, choose a larger one.
  • Another fairly basic aspect is to use only one perfume at a time, being patient enough to finish it before starting another one.
  • Always keep in mind that the worst enemies of all perfumes are light and heat. Direct light, whether solar or artificial, and contact with heat sources can significantly damage the fragrance, causing it to lose its intensity and persistence. For this reason, the packaging of Flos Floris fragrances is designed to protect the perfume from light sources, incorporating an aluminum cone to contain the glass bottle.
  • Never throw away the original box, as keeping the perfume in it allows for better preservation and avoids direct light.
  • Finally, make sure it is properly closed to prevent the substances from dispersing into the air.

The perfect places to store a fragrance

If you want a perfume that lasts long and leaves a trail when you wear it, always remember that the ideal place to store it is a dry and dark environment. Most people are used to keeping it in the bathroom, but this is the biggest mistake you can make. That is because constant temperature fluctuations and high humidity levels are particularly damaging to the proper preservation of perfume.

So, what are the suitable places to keep it?

  • Bedroom;
  • Closet or any type of drawer;
  • Inside its original packaging;
  • In a room with a temperature that does not exceed around 20 degrees Celsius;
  • More unusual but definitely the best ones are the refrigerator and the cellar, as they are characterized by being dark and cool places. After all, perfumes, like wine, need to be stored carefully to maintain their freshness and authenticity.

Do perfumes really have an expiration date?

Actually, yes, like any type of beauty product. Although a fragrance’s life is really long, especially if made with quality ingredients, after typically 36 months from opening it, significant changes may occur.

But how do you recognize an expired perfume?

  • Try to see if there are any sour notes when you smell it;
  • Observe the bottle to see if there has been a change in the color of the perfume: if it tends to be darker than it was at the beginning, it is probably no longer suitable for use;
  • Try spraying it to see if the fragrance notes linger on the skin as they did when you first used it;
  • Finally, check if the packaging has a PAO (Period After Opening) number that will tell you exactly how long the perfume can last after opening it.

What to do before a vacation: travel-size perfume

One item that most people consider necessary when preparing for a trip is perfume. Between rules regarding which liquid substances are allowed on the plane and the hot climate of your next destination, it is important to understand what to do to bring your perfume with you.

First of all the same guidelines mentioned earlier apply even when traveling, particularly the storing of the perfume in a dry place away from direct light and heat.

But a particularly useful tip is to leave the classic bottle of your fragrance at home and opt for the small size, perfect for travelling. Flos Floris has transformed the entire Lux collection into a box containing the miniatures of the various perfumes: the Minilux collection. This way, you can bring a selection of perfumes with you to experiment with different fragrances without taking up too much space in your suitcase.
